William McDonough + Partners and Anshen + Allen collaborated on the design of a new UCSF Medical Center complex at Mission Bay, located on a 14.5 acre parcel just south of the 43-acre life sciences complex.
UCSF charged the team with creating a design that supports new ways to advance health and contributes to the healing process by providing abundant connections to nature and integrating sustainability at all levels. To meet this charge, WM+P integrated the latest research in evidence-based design with the leading edge of sustainability practices. In addition to collaborating on the overall hospital design, WM+P worked closely with MBDC to establish protocols for in-depth materials analysis of patient room finishes, in order to ensure that every feature was designed to support healing. WM+P also conducted detailed studies of patient room daylighting and visual comfort, roof top photovoltaic layout configuration, and on site water balance strategies. By establishing clear principles, goals, strategies and metrics for the development of UCSF Mission Bay, and evaluating design decisions against this framework, WM+P helped to focus an extensive design team and ensure the project met its goals in the most effective ways.
The first phase, to be completed in 2014, will include a family-centered children’s hospital with 183 beds, a 70-bed cancer hospital for adult patients, a specialty women’s hospital with a 36-bed birth center, ambulatory care services, central utilities plant, 500 parking spaces and support facilities.
