Under the Schaalsprong Almere plan for growth, Almere will become the fifth largest city in the Netherlands with 350,000 people living and working in a place that was only very recently reclaimed from the sea. This will require doubling Almere’s current population between now and 2030—an unprecedented rate of growth, with a resulting population exceeding what was originally intended when the polder was planned and built thirty years ago.
To guide this development, the WM+P and the Municipality of Almere collaborated to develop “the next set of Hannover Principles.” The resulting document is a powerful and inspirational declaration of intent for an ecological, economic and socially sustainable city that reflects the history and character of the people of Almere.
