American University School of International Service
Washington, DC
Overview

How can we design a building that inspires students to dream?

This charge—articulated by the dean of the country’s largest foreign service program—has guided the design team. Serving as a physical and virtual symbol of the School’s tradition of global service and innovative initiatives, the new building will provide a vibrant center for teaching, research and public dialogue. To fulfill the mission of the community to which it is home, this academic building must be capable of supporting sustainable development, social justice, poverty eradication, and peace. Its location in the nation’s capital offers additional potential to inspire other communities as well. The strategies currently being explored in the design—vegetated roof terraces, on-site generation of renewable energy, Cradle to Cradle material specifications, and abundant fresh air and daylight—will be implemented as tools capable of demonstrating and teaching the highest degrees of environmental responsibility for students, staff, and faculty.
