William McDonough + Partners & LEED
A total of 17 members of the William McDonough + Partners team are LEED® accredited professionals, reinforcing the firm’s leadership position in the sustainable design movement and its strong relationship with the U.S. Green Building Council and its LEED Rating System.
Created by the USGBC, LEED (which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a multifaceted and widely accepted system of standards and processes used to evaluate the environmental performance of building and design projects. LEED accreditation signifies an individual’s knowledge of core green building design practices, strategies, and methods, as well as familiarity with industry standards including benchmarks.
The presence of an accredited professional on a design team of a project registered for LEED Certification earns a point in the Rating System. LEED criteria serve as one of several tools integrated within WM+P's design process. William McDonough + Partners has nurtured a relationship with the USGBC for some time. As a founding member of the U.S. Green Building Council, founding partner William A. McDonough, FAIA, along with other members of the firm, have offered expert guidance and feedback on the development of LEED. For more information about LEED-related programs and activities, visit the U.S. Green Building Council’s web site at www.usgbc.org.

McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, the firm that McDonough founded with Michael Braungart (with whom he co authored the 2002 book, Cradle to Cradle), celebrated a new development in its relationship with the USGBC and LEED. In April 2007, as part of their an effort to help stimulate the development of environmentally focused product evaluation and certification tools for use by building professionals, the USGBC established an Innovation in Design credit for specification of products certified under the Cradle to CradleSM Certification program. This program, described in detail at www.c2ccertified.com, provides manufacturers with a means to measure achievement in environmentally intelligent design and helps customers purchase and specify products that are pursuing a broader definition of quality. If a candidate product achieves the necessary criteria, it is certified as a Silver, Gold or Platinum product and can be labeled as Cradle to Cradle. For more details on the Cradle to Cradle LEED Innovation Point: www.mbdc.com/cert_innovation_credit.htm.
