WM+P Teams with Anshen + Allen to Design UCSF Medical Center
University of California, San Francisco has selected the  team of William McDonough + Partners and Anshen + Allen to design its Mission Bay hospital complex. The first phase of the $1.3 billion project is already underway and will include a 183-bed children’s hospital, a 36-bed women’s treatment center, and a 70-bed cancer facility. Teaming with an award-winning firm that specializes in healthcare facilities like A+A makes it doubly exciting to explore the synergies between human health and cradle-to-cradle design in our first-ever assignment to design a healthcare facility. Look for updates in the coming months and years.

I recently had the pleasure of reconnecting with Herman Gyr and Lisa Friedman for dinner in Palo Alto during one of my frequent trips to the west coast. Herman and Lisa are two friends who have been long-standing supporters and advocates of William McDonough + Partners. At dinner we caught up on each others’ work over the past couple of years. Herman and Lisa’s company is the Enterprise Development Group, which focuses on strategic transformation and innovation for an astonishingly diverse array of national and international organizations. In between bites of sushi, it became clear to each of us that not only have we been busy, but we’ve also been blessed to be busy doing important, meaningful work. One theme kept coming up during the dinner:  “these are amazing times.”

Reflecting on the dinner conversation, I was struck by a couple of recurrent issues, themes that really represent the unique moment and environment that WM+P finds itself in. First, interest in climate change and the global environmental crisis has clearly reached a tipping point, and organizations are developing fundamental commitments to this cause. We are seeing this commitment across all sectors: companies, not-for-profits, utilities, governmental agencies, cities, regions, and states. In the past six months, representatives from each of these areas have approached us to discuss specific ways that we can help them address climate change and the environment in their buildings and their planning.

Second, clients are looking for specific tools for addressing these issues. There’s more commitment than ever before toward developing operative strategies and approaches that can both address global issues and align with the organization’s core mission. And there’s an even greater commitment to monitoring such strategies in order to collect feedback and make constant improvements over time.

This demand for specific tools and approaches has had an impact on the very nature of our practice. Alongside our core mission of delivering high-quality architecture and community design leadership, we are developing the capacity to provide a broad range of consulting services that reflect our eco-effective approach to sustainability. Over the past twelve years while WM+P has practiced in Charlottesville, we have had the privilege of working on a wide array of ambitious projects with visionary clients who have sought innovative solutions to environmental, social, and economic design challenges.  In a sense, we’ve been training for this “tipping point” moment for all these years, and with the opening of our San Francisco studio, we are adding additional capacity and presence to respond to our clients’ important needs more effectively.
