WM+P Designs Fortune's "Tower of Tomorrow"
Working from the premise that a building can lend a positive, productive presence to its surroundings, WM+P just completed a pop-quiz assignment from Fortune: design the building of the future. The results of our intensive team effort -- the integrated state-of-the-shelf urban tower at left, which the editors dubbed the "Tower of Tomorrow" -- appears in a gatefold spread in Fortune's November 13 issue (on newsstands now). The online version of the story features an exclusive CNNMoney.com interview with William McDonough.

William McDonough + Partners Opens West Coast Studio

by Kevin Burke, AIA

In early October 1994, a small contingent from William McDonough + Partners -- then a firm newly established in Charlottesville -- traveled to San Francisco to participate in a kick-off meeting for Gap Inc.’s new corporate campus. I was fortunate to participate in that trip as well as the ensuing project. The meeting was memorable for a number of reasons: the promise of our winning entry for the Gap competition was coming into fruition; we were working with an enthusiastic client who was willing to innovate; and we were surrounded by a full team of energetic, like-minded individuals preparing to design the ground-breaking 901 Cherry Offices. Quite simply, the Bay Area has been a great fit for WM+P from the start.

Over the twelve years since that first visit, we have established a tremendous following and solid foundation for working effectively in the Bay Area. We have created valued relationships with forward-thinking companies, developers, builders, specialists in sustainable design, and a broad group of supporters. And in so many cases, these relationships have blossomed into close friendships and collaborations that continue to enhance our professional practice and personal lives. In fact, we’ve come to consider ourselves a “Bay Area firm located in Charlottesville, Virginia,” for a long time now.

So it’s within that context that we are thrilled to announce the opening of William McDonough + Partners’ new West Coast Studio in San Francisco. Located in a beautiful, light-filled office loft on the ninth floor at 177 Post Street, our studio is led by West Coast Director David Johnson (formerly of STUDIOS ARCHITECTS and HOK in San Francisco) and Director Matthew Winkelstein (formerly of HOK San Francisco). Acting as an extension of our Charlottesville office, the West Coast Studio will help expand WM+P's reach throughout West Coast, China, and the Pacific Rim.

PROJECT NEWS

Greenbridge | Chapel Hill, NC Greenbridge Draws Local Support
UNC-Chapel Hill's Daily Tarheel reported on the opening of the Greenbridge design center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The 115-unit mixed-use development draws its name from the role it plays in bridging the adjacent town line between Chapel Hill and Carrboro. The design aspires to create a truly indigenous building through the use of orientation, materials and resources that are fitting and appropriate to its place. Numerous solar panels and green rooftops will help distinguish the 115-unit development from other mixed-use complexes, as will several street-level storefronts catering to companies whose businesses emphasize sustainability.

Stans Museum of Life and the Environment Stans Museum of Life and the Environment Moves Ahead
The expansive green roofs of the Stans Museum of Life and the Environment may come to York County, SC, sooner than once thought. Thanks to the generosity of the Stans family, who recently committed a $10 million challenge pledge, construction is now slated to begin in 2009. The family also donated some 200 mounted African animals -- one of the largest collections of its kind -- which will serve as one of the museum's core collections. Steven Stans, president of the Stans Foundation, recently told Dan Huntley of the Charlotte Observer, “My family and I have been watching the evolution of the Museum of York County over these last years. The plans for the Museum ... are exciting and nationally significant. We want to get the job done -- and quickly." The project also received some interesting offline coverage in the June 2006 issue of Urban Land.
